Asparagus
Asparagus grows as a permanent crop in the edible garden. Choose a position that it can stay in for up to 20 years without interfering with other activities.
A sunny well drained position is best and the soil should be prepared with compost and blood and bone.
Plant the new crowns about 300mm apart on small mounds about 50mm high for good drainage to start them off.
Mulch with about 75 mm of good compost. This will need to be done annually.
Water well during the growing season and do NOT cut any stems this season
In autumn when the leaves and stems turn yellow cut the off to about 50mm above ground level.
It may be necessary to erect a staking system and jute string to hold the stems upright each year.
In following seasons as the plants get bigger more and more stems can be cut.
Do not cut the stems after Christmas in NZ to allow the plants to build up a good root system for the next crop in spring
