This lovely thin stemmed twining climber from Australia is a favourite in small and large gardens. The thin stems grow up to 3m long twining around shrubs or a climbing frame to establish itself.
Flowering in spring its 30mm long tubular solitary flowers and are pendulous from the thin stems. The masses of greenish/yellow colour makes bright display and changes slightly to have a blue tip to the petals as they age.
Following flowering large, light blue berries form which also hang from the slender stems and over time change colour to a darker purple hence its common name Purple Appleberry. They too are attractive and last for several months.
It is easily grown in most gardens preferring moist soil and semi shade. The stems grow rapidly but because they are so thin do not overrun anything. They will clamber over shrubs or climbing frame. It is easily kept under control with light pruning if required.
Its native habitat is woodlands, open forest and margins of temperate forest of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
