Chelsea Physic Garden, London, UK
Chelsea and the Chelsea Physic Garden are well worth a visit if only to see the wonderful brick apartment buildings.
Leaving the Sloan Square train station and walking about 15 - 20 mins to the Chelsea Physic Garden you pass the Royal Chelsea Hospital the site of the Chelsea Flower Show.
Behind a high nondescript brick fence a small green and white sign identifies the site of the Chelsea Physic Garden. Then follow the signs around the corner to the main entrance. It certainly is an experience getting there.
Once inside with four different types of plant collections.
Taxonomic Collections.
Here plants have been formally planted in their families in long rectangular beds. The first family is the least complex being Magnoliaceae and next to it the next related slightly more complex family and this continues through all the families to the most complex of all the Daisy family. the relationships between families can be identified more easily in this collection.
Collections by use.
It should come as no surprise that this method of putting together plant collections would be practiced by pharmacists. Clearly collections of plants that have similar medical properties would be a major source of information and study in those early years.
Geographic Collections
There are a few geographic collections related to the plant collecting undertaken by Directors and staff of the Chelsea Physic Garden.
Landscape collections
Here plants are displayed at their best to show the benefits of those plants in public and private gardens.
Interpretation
As a traditional botanic garden in plant collections it does try hard to impart a great deal of information to people visiting the garden. Informative name plates, large explanation/interpretive signs, interaction boxes and guided tours all help make it interesting.
Great place for the plant collector, historian, pharmacist, horticulturist and others to visit.
Please read the information brochure which has been scanned and is available at the bottom of the page.
