Disporum sessile ‘Variegatum’
apanese Fairy Bells
This is quite and uncommon woodland plant which is a native of Japan and South East Asia America. It grows very well in New Zealand.
Belonging to the Lily of the Valley family Convallariaceae it is one of about 10 species of deciduous perennials growing from a white underground rhizome.
Flowering in spring and early summer with its 300mm long, lily like, white/cream, green tipped, pendulous, flowers this perennial grows extremely well in cool sheltered shady areas to great effect. It will grow in sunny conditions but here it lacks the lushness in can provide in the cool. The flowers are followed by black fruit.
The erect stems arise from the ground in spring carrying the sword shaped leaves spiralling around the tall strong thin stem. This variegated form is most attractive in providing a ground cover for woodlands, rhododendrons or camellias. The stems rise to about 250mm depending upon location. Near the tip of the stems pendulous, cream, bell shaped flowers appear.
It is easily cared for and can be easily split up and replanted in different parts of the garden.
Used as for planting under rhododendrons it makes a great show.
This variegated form is but one of several now available. Visit my Pinterest page to see photos of Disporum sessile and many of its cultivars that may be available in some countries.
