How to Fertilise Lawns.
Fertilising lawns is very easy. It only needs to be done twice a year unless you have a desire for a first class lawn.
Make your own fertiliser mix
2 parts by weight Ammonium sulphate 1 part by weight Superphosphate. Apply in spring and autumn at the rate of 30 grams per square metre (30 grams is the equivalent of a clenched fistful of the mix).
Apply the mix evenly. If it is uneven brown patches will be burned onto the green grass.
After applying the fertiliser sprinkle the lawn lightly with water to wash the fertiliser off the foliage and onto the soil. This will stop any burning and help the fertiliser become soluble and easily absorbed by the grass plants.
If the lawn looks really starved of nutrients then increase the nitrogen content with a mix of 3 to 1.
Applying this fertiliser mix has the additional benefit of increasing the soil pH (making it more acid) which helps reduce weed growth.
Purchase ready made lawn fertiliser mixes.
These are available from most garden outlets and they are usually similar to the mix described above.
