Illicium anisatum
A native of Japan and China and is best known as an ingredient in Incense. It is poisonous when ingested. Several Illicium are very closely related by looks and these need careful study. Chemical analysis and DNA testing may be required. I do not presume to be an expert.
A shrub or small tree with the young branches glabrous, green and spotted brown. Leaves are 5cm to 10 cm long and narrowly ovate and blunt at the apex.
It flowers in spring with multi petalled lemon coloured flowers on a short stalk being 25mm across with up 30 pale greenish yellow petals. It is not fragrant.
This slow growing evergreen shrub is excellent in the garden. In spring it is conspicuous with its many flowers.
