Illicium henryi
A small tree with oblong lanceolate, leathery leaves pointed at the apex.
Quite different in flower colour to other illiciums. It can vary in colour from pink to crimson and the individual flowers can also show these colours. It is fragrant.
Solitary flowers are produced in the leaf axils and each can have up to 20 petals. The petals are quite rounded compared with other species which are generally long and narrow.
Native of Western China and discovered by Augustine henry and later collected by Wilson who sent seed to back to the UK.
