Illicium verum Star Anise
In nature a tree up to 10 metres high with dark grey bark and congested branchlets. In cultivation it is a slow growing shrub eventually growing into a small tree.
Several Illicium are very closely related by looks and these need careful study. Chemical analysis and DNA testing may be required. I do not presume to be an expert. Illicium verum is the real Star Anise BUT it is similar to other poisonous species.
This is an interesting plant to grow. Being evergreen and producing up to two flowerings a year with exquisite and unusual flowers it is instantly a talking point.
The irregularly alternate, thick, brittle, leathery leaves covered with oily glands are dark green above and lighter below with a prominent midrib. Leaves are between 5 – 15 cm long and 2-5 cm across.
Flowers are solitary carried on 4cm long stems in the leaf axils at the shoot tips. Petals are many (16-20) and papery thin pink/white at the ends and red on the inside and dark red in the middle. Flowers appear from September to October and a second flowering in autumn.
The fruit is a star shaped follicle which are used in perfume, medicines and as a culinary spice.
It is a native of China but has been in cultivation for many years throughout China and south east Asia.
Further information. Various texts and reputable websites provide much information on Star anise as a culinary spice.
