Leucosceptrum canum
Leucosceptrum canum Hairy white-wand
This shrub or sometimes a small tree with multiple upright stems grows quite well in New Zealand. It is native to south-western China and eastern and northern Indochina.
The unusual flower candles are comprised of many individual flowers. The small flower buds are cream-white with white hairs joined together making an upright candle effect. When in full flower stamen protrude from the candle like a bottle brush.
Flowers contain an unusual brown nectar which is attractive to birds and insects.
Leaves are large dull green, glabrous (hairless) above, woolly-white hairy below. This white woolly hairiness is noticable on new growth, flower buds and leaf petioles.
