Lords Bush Scenic Reserve
Mid January 2018.
Lords Bush Scenic reserve is located on Rubicon Road in the locality of Kowai Bush. Kowai Bush is about 15km north of Springfield.
An unlikely scenic reserve on first viewing with its long grass and mown pathways leading towards some native trees. In the distance and surrounding areas tall Kahikatea or White Pine trees stand tall.
Following the path leading into the bush/regenerating native forest is an interesting and unexpected transition from the grassland to the bush.
Apart from more Kahikatea the main tree to attract my attention was the Hinau, Elaeocarpus dentatus. This broad leaf tree produces a fantastic display of flowers in early December followed by a large crop of berries. In one tree several bellbirds were playing and singing in the tops of the tree and perhaps feeding on the ripe berries.
Later we discovered three stems of the newly named parasitic orchid Gastrodea molloyii.
Several plants of the following were seen
Clematis paniculata - large flowered clematis
Parsonsia heterophylla - NZ Jasmine
Fuscospora solandri, Black Beech, tawhai pango
A great little discovery and well worth the effort to see these trees.
