Shallots
Shallots are easy to grow and can be used in place of onions for cooking.
Purchase shallot bulbs and plant them as early as possible in mid winter or a little later if in a colder area of the country.
Plant about to a depth of about half the bulb and about 12cm apart.
They will quickly show leaves and start growing.
During the growing season you may be able to use some of the leaves in place of chives.
Let the grow and multiply on their own and harvest them when the leaves are dying down or have died off.
Store in a cool dry place for use.
Some of the bulbs may be kept for replanting in winter for your next crop.
