Sophora fulvida - Kowhai
This is a rare species of Kowhai in both the wild and cultivation. It is excellent for small gardens and larger spaces. It does not go through a juvenile stage meaning it can be trained as a nice tree early in its life.
Quite easily identified at any time of the year through its long narrow leaves with many opposite small leaflets. All growing parts being covered in whitish grey or fulvous (red brown), soft, dense hairs. which is lovely to touch.
Flowers are lemon yellow appearing in October to November from small annual spurs which can be seen forming in mid winter. It is easy to grow from seed.
In nature it grows in scrub and coastal forest in Northland and Auckland New Zealand.
