Erythronium revolutum
It has several common names - Mahogany fawn lily, coast fawn lily, pink fawn lily and is native to the west coast of North America.
One of the most eagerly awaited little bulbs to flower each spring this is a spectacular plant for your garden and is easily grown.
Erythronium revolutum is one of the smallest of the commonly grown species and quite variable in colour. The leaves are mid green and nicely marked and blotched with silver and light brown marble like markings. The flowers are lilac to rose pink in colour and reach about 100mm high. The petals when open in full sun reflex back to expose the centre of the flower. A neat little plant for the rock garden or front of border where there is reasonable moisture.
The nodding flowers are lovely with their reflexed petals changing shape daily. The flowers do not last a long time but with several bulbs there can be a succession of flowers over a few weeks.
Once the flowers are open they move the long stem from their nodding position to upright as the flower finishes and seed are setting. The seed ripens quite quickly and it can be harvested or sprinkled on the ground for more plants to grow. It takes about 3-5 years for a seedling to flower.
Once you have this established in a shady and somewhat damp soil it spreads by seeding so it will give you pleasure every year.
It grows from a oval-shaped bulb 30–50 mm long and produces two wide, flat, mottled green leaves just about lying flat near the ground.
