Mount Hutt 9 January 2019
Excellent visit to Mount Hutt. Weather was fine, lightly overcast and sometimes windy.
Wind shifts are a feature of the NZ mountain areas. NZ is an island nation where nowhere is further than 120 Km from the sea. Also we are exposed to the southern ocean and weather from Antarctica. We are also influenced by westerly winds from Australia and the Tasman Sea which hit the West Coast rise up rapidly over the Alps and fall quickly to the east coast creating a warm fern Wind which at times can be extremely hot.
Excellent conditions for plant hunting and photography.
Today we were unable to get up to the ski field so concentrated our time at Rakaia Saddle. This area has open scree areas, settled scree, rocky out crops, grasslands and shrubs.
Below are some of the plants we saw.
