Lobelia angulata
Panakenake, syn. Pratia angulata
An interesting flat growing, mat forming plant which makes a great wide spreading ground cover with roots all along the stem. In cultivation it will grow over itself making an informal undulating bright green ground cover. The leaves are small rounded and shallowly toothed. It is fast growing and very popular, as it is easy to establish.
When in flower it covers itself with masses of white flowers with purple veins, yellow throat and purplish stamen. Each flower is held up on a single peduncles rising from the creeping stem. Flowers are followed by quite large purplish berries.
Found throughout New Zealand from sea level to 1300m. Some alpine forms are smaller and tighter and may make good cultivars.
It grows well in damp places and in the mountains is found on well lit permanently moist sites including stream sides.
