Macadamia
Macadamia is a delicious nut bearing tree belonging to the Protea family (Proteaceae). This family has many wonderful flowering plants well known around the world. All members of the family are native to the Southern Hemisphere.
The Macadamia genus of 4 species are all native to Northern New South Wales and Queensland Australia. Nuts from two of the species, M. jansenii and M. ternifolia contain cyanogenic glycosidesmwhich are very poisonous.
M. integrifolia and M tetraphylla produce edible nuts but the best fruiting varieties are derived form hybrids between these two species.
They are one of the few Australian native plants developed as a food crop.
In New Zealand macadamia were first grown about 1932 in Kerikeri. Much of the early NZ orchards were from this seed sowing.
While they are known as great nut producers the tree is also used in gardens as once growing require little work.
